Colorful July 4th…

Hope you are enjoying a colorful fourth of July. I was curious to know how they make purple fireworks- turns out that the manufacturers use a mixture of strontium (red) and copper (blue) compounds. Now that makes sense to me.

What surprised me , was just how many sites are available detailing on how to make your own fireworks? Something I won’t be doing anytime soon.

There ia a colorful post on the color of fireworks on the Colourlovers blog and more information on how fireworks are colored here.

One of my favorite purple mixes in polymer clay is 4 parts Ultramarine, 3 parts Fuchsia and one part neon pink? Do you have a purple recipe that you use often?

Hi Lindly! I hope you had a good holiday!

When I was studying environmental science in college, I learned about all the heavy metals they put in fireworks and how they ended up in our oceans, rivers and lakes. Really put a damper on the fourth of July for me. Sometimes ignorance is bliss… sort of.

Thanks for the purple recipe, Lindly. I look forward to giving it a try. I would offer one of my recipes for purple, but I clay like I cook… a bit here, a bunch there, and mix well. I have always admired folks (especially you and Maggie) who can keep track of stuff like that… I’ve tried, but it just doesn’t seem to work for me. Chaos is my muse I guess.
